No, A-Math is not a compulsory O-level subject. It isn't a prerequisite for all Polytechnic courses, though some university programmes require it when applying with a diploma. However, A-Math is a prerequisite for H2 Math in JC and HL Math in IB.
A-math is typically recommended for students aiming for higher education in STEM courses (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

You can bypass the A-Math requirement through qualifying tests for all the above courses. However, if you can pass these tests, taking A-Math initially would have been more efficient.
Learning A-Math in secondary school clearly provides broader options for tertiary education, beyond just the subject knowledge. Students planning to attend Polytechnics should note that while A-Math isn't required for admission, it may resurface as a prerequisite for university applications.
While some may suggest focusing solely on E-Math rather than dual math subjects. This advice incorrectly assumes every student will perform better in E-Math, as we've seen cases where students excel in A-Math instead. Prematurely eliminating A-Math may limit the flexibility of using both mathematics subjects for L1R5 and ELR2B2.

In terms of content, A-Math is definitely more challenging than E-Math.
The Additional Mathematics syllabus builds upon E-Math knowledge with common topics like Equations, Functions, Indices, Trigonometry, and Coordinate Geometry. However, A-Math takes the fundamental concepts further.
For instance, Trigonometry in E-Math covers only Acute and Obtuse Triangles, while A-Math introduces the Unit Circle definition. Similarly, E-Math involves basic usage of Circle Properties, but A-Math requires detailed proofs in Plane Geometry.
E-Math also exclusively covers Vectors, Probability and Statistics, while Calculus is a major component to A-Math only. E-Math requires modest algebraic skills, focusing on everyday problems like travel, finance, and navigation. In contrast, A-Math demands mastery of complex Algebra as the foundation for Surds, Partial Fractions, Binomial Expansion, and Logarithms.
With such a comprehensive syllabus, school teachers often cannot provide individual attention to every student. A dedicated tutor can fill this gap by working through exam papers and targeted questions to help students understand key A-Math concepts.
